About us
The Pan-Mass Challenge raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through an annual bike-a-thon that crosses the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Since its founding in 1980, the PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors. All are essential to the PMC's goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. Our hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber's doctors and researchers with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers. The 2022 gift was $69 million. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $900 million.

Up next in the 5 Questions with PMC CEO, Jarrett Collins, is 21-Year PMC Rider and Captain PMC Team Kermit, Steven Branfman! #PMC2024 #OneInABillion 🚲
"We're in this for life." Every spring, across New England, riders dust off their bikes and begin training for the most successful athletic fundraiser in the country, the Pan-Mass Challenge. Teams are an important part of the experience for about 75% of PMC riders, and the captains who lead them are essential to their success. Here's the story of one of these generous leaders, Steven Branfman... 1. What are you trying to accomplish? When our older son, Jared, was diagnosed with spinal tumors in 2003 and began treatment, my wife, younger son, and I wanted to contribute to the pediatric cancer community in a material way. We knew about the Pan-Mass Challenge and had always supported friends, but now it was time to join the community as riders and fundraisers. Our first PMC was in 2004: my son, Adam, and I registered late, so the only route open was a one-day ride from Wellesley to Bourne. We hadn't pedaled a full mile before I turned to Adam and said, "Next year we're riding two days from Sturbridge to Provincetown, and we're in this for life." We formed Team Kermit (after Jared's favorite childhood toy) in 2005; Jared passed away later that year. The PMC - the event, the mission, the camaraderie - became our lifeblood, a lifeline, and a purpose beyond description. Team Kermit has since raised $7 million for the PMC. 2. What's motivating you? I am motivated by the need to create, both materially and emotionally. As a clay artist, I speak and express myself through the language of art, and clay is my dialect. I am both a teacher and a student. I am motivated by wanting my students to expand their horizons and experiences as I share my knowledge and experiences with them. I am motivated by the excitement and fulfillment I feel as I continue to learn and expand my vocabulary. I am motivated by my dedication to helping others less fortunate. I am motivated by family, my work, and to honor the memory of my son and his legacy. Jared woke every day trying to make the world a better place. I hate to go to bed at night and I can't wait to wake up in the morning. 3. What's stopping you? Only the limitations that are part and parcel of my personal situation and circumstances: I only have so much money, skills and knowledge, and name recognition. And there are only 24 hours in a day. 4. What can we do to help? Keep growing the PMC. Keep allowing us to ride and raise the critical dollars to find a cure. It's an honor to be a PMCer. 5. What do you like to do for fun? I've been an athlete my whole life: soccer, basketball, softball, and other sports. I started competing in track and field when I was 12 years old and continued through intercollegiate competition. I'm the co-Head Boys Track Coach at Thayer Academy and I love being out there with my athletes. I'm an avid cyclist beyond the PMC. I love reading, film, theater, food (eating and cooking!), gardening and music, listening to and playing guitar. There's no shortage of fun in my life.
